This colloquium addresses scale transition and homogenisation in heterogeneous materials undergoing inelastic behaviour — plasticity, creep, damage and fracture — driven by coupled energetic and dissipative mechanisms at the microscale. It brings together recent progress in variational formulations, full-field simulations and physically informed machine-learning approaches to improve predictive capability, interpretability and multiscale consistency. Four topics structure the programme: theoretical and computational homogenisation models; characterisation and modelling of microstructures; data-based schemes for multiscale transition; and mechanism-based scale transitions in plasticity. The colloquium aims to confront rigorous theoretical frameworks with advanced imaging, in-situ testing and data-driven constitutive inference.
